A graceful native of the Dominican Republic started to show an interest for beauty and art at an early age. Moving to New York at age 5, Ana grew up fascinated by fashion and design. Encouraged by her family, Ana Oz started to play with occaisional modeling jobs and acting roles. Back in the Caribbean, she attended Altos de Chavon School of Design, an International Art & Design Community in Altos de Chavon in La Romana, Dominican Republic.
Soon after she returned to New York continuing her modeling career, appearing in commercials and also participating as a host of several television shows. However, her true passion in life was starting to take shape and the Fashion Institute of Technology (FIT) provided the knowledge and training for what later became her career. Her first steps were working as a purchaser in the Garment District giving her opportunities to travel around the world, admire different cultures and how they lived, realizing how important it is for the human environment and harmony of the place that they call home.

Looking always for challenge and new experiences, Ana Oz decided to make South Florida her new home, giving her the opportunities of meeting new clients and travel more often to the Dominican Republic and Bahamas, visiting family and take on new design projects, and of course the convenience of an under 3 hour flight from her beloved New York where she continued working on design.

When Ana Oz of Ana Oz Designs was commissioned by a family to design their new 85th floor Manhattan apartment in the Trump United Plaza, she knew what she was getting into. And, having worked with Oz on previous projects, the owners knew that she could once again achieve their desired look and feel.

Having recently completed a home in Miami for the family, Oz was given free reign to remodel and decorate. The owners, who own several homes, told Oz that they wanted the unit to have the “I’m home” feel, even if for a brief stay. With that in mind, Oz transformed the 3,000-square-foot apartment into an elegant yet comfortable and functional living space that satisfies the owners’ tastes while complementing the surrounding aesthetics.

Achieving the client’s vision was easy for Oz, whose classic modern and elegant approach keeps things uncomplicated. Oz custom-designed the key furnishings, which were built in Miami and assembled in New York. Farrey’s Lighting in Miami is used throughout, along with custom chandeliers from NiBa Home from the Miami Design District. Handmade silk and silk/wool rugs by Advanced Trading Inc. and Faith Oriental Rug Co., both in Miami’s Design District, are also found throughout. Silk drapery by Kravet and Jeffrey Michaels & Co., and motorized window treatments by Maria Clara of Urive Window Treatments, both of Miami, are used throughout the home.

The apartment features custom floor-to-ceiling wenge pocket doors that, when closed, become small, individual rooms. When opened, the apartment has the illusion of unlimited, free-flowing space. “I wanted to give each room its own theme, soul and character,” she said. Oz redesigned the layout to maximize the space with very little construction. “My clients needed more storage space for their children and themselves. That took some very creative thinking and execution,” she said.

Another challenge was what to keep of the prior décor. The walls were originally painted in an oxidized yellow-beige and

featured maple parquet flooring. “The unit did not reflect the beauty or the story each room needed to tell,” explained Oz. “My clients were anxious to bring it up to par.”

Oz kept the flooring and used a sand color hue on the walls throughout the common areas. “I thought it would make a great marriage between the yellowish hue of the maple flooring,” she explained. In the kitchen Oz changed the walls to a grey pearlized hue Venetian plaster to play along with the stainless-steel appliances. To warm the apartment, Oz blended the client’s love for dark browns and chocolates with spicy hues and exotic woods.

When redesigning the interior, Oz took advantage of the panoramic view of the cityand the 16-foot-high ceilings. “Having New York City as my backdrop was really the inspiration for this project; it was my canvas. And the ceilings, well… that is the sweetest dream for any interior decorator!” she exclaimed.

Oz began by utilizing the wasted space throughout. For instance, a portion of a hallway was reincarnated into a closet that leads to the master bedroom. The new closet has functional shelving inside and two large beveled doors. Oz framed the entire wall in beveled glass, simulating a custom-made armoire.

Throughout Oz created a focal point for each room that ties into the view. She designed key pieces of furniture to accommodate. In the living room chocolate brown dominates with an L-shaped custom leather couch by Design Within Reach, Miami, and soft micro-suede burnt orange pillows. Here, Oz created two spaces – an Oriental sitting area and an entertainment area. A large silver-framed mirror by Phillipe Starck rests against one wall, creating a sense of even more space. The room also features a dark wood base and glass-top cocktail table by Design Within

           Reach.

Dominating the room is a custom-designed wenge entertainment center that houses a plasma TV and artwork and sculpture.
The Oriental sitting area features a 63-inch custom wenge table and six burnt orange ottomans. A wool area rug from Faith Oriental Rug Co. adds color. Across from the sitting area and facing the window Oz created a workspace nook with a floating glass-top desk.

In the dining room, burnt orange Venetian-plaster walls add texture and dimension. The walls and burnt orange chairs blend perfectly with the wenge table from B&B Italia that opens to seat 10. Above, a 12-arm, grey cut-glass chandelier from NiBa Home hangs. The focal point of this room is wall art that Oz created from an antique, floor-to-ceiling mother of pearl inlay armoire that was in the apartment. Here the project’s master carpenter cut the face of the original piece and mounted it on the wall. Oz custom-designed extra chair covers in Alcantara suede in an array of colors.

In the master bedroom Oz created a serene oasis with thoughtful luxury, including a custom-made tufted dark brown Alcantara suede headboard. Because the ceiling is so high in this room, Oz custom-designed a backsplash with wenge squares and stainless-steel inlay with the goal of refocusing the eye. Two floating wenge night tables frame the king-size bed; above, two lamps from Farrey’s are built into the backsplash, allowing for a continuous floating feel. The bed is dressed in a white cotton comforter with navy blue accents and Moroccan motif accent pillows. The highlight of the bedroom is a 14-foot custom-made wenge library/office that houses a computer, copier, file cabinets, plasma TV and small sculptures, as well as a massive book collection. The curtains are a beautiful cream raw silk.

One of the children’s rooms was converted into a double bedroom – one for the nursery and the other serving as a nursing room/guest room. The children’s room was done in baby blue to play off the solid white mica-covered custom beds. Baby blue curtains have whimsy animal prints and ballerinas. In the guest room Oz opted for a darker grey-blue on the walls. The room features a micro-suede dark brown sofa sleeper from Scan Design and a plasma TV. To connect the rooms, Oz designed two area rugs with inverted designs and color that match up to each other.

The end result is a beautiful, high-end Midtown apartment that is inviting and warm. “It’s my pride and joy,” she said.

           LUXURY CONDO LIVING

Designer Ana Oz approached the design of the $2 million penthouse with her time-proven approach — identifying and meeting her client’s needs. By fully studying the client’s tastes preferences and budget, she created an environment that conveyed her client’s individuality and accommodated his needs. This “designer ready” unit, which was purchased during pre-construction, offered unique challenges and she worked closely with the owner — a single doctor — to create an environment in which he could both entertain and host his children. “There was no real budget,” said Oz, “but I knew that he didn’t want to spend a fortune.

We definitely achieved our goals with practicality and efficiency, and the result is beautiful

           WHAT WAS YOUR INSPIRATION?

This 2,500-square-foot residence has magnificent views of the city and beaches. The splendid sunsets and sunrises were the focus that developed this lovely bachelor’s pad into a modern-tropical, yet sophisticated heaven that brings in the natural outdoor beauty and creates a syneergistic marriage between nature and space.

WHAT WERE SOME OF THE DESIGN CHALLENGES?

The curvilinear rounded ceiling-to-floor windows and asymmetrical walls were some of the toughest design challenges. Creativity and vision played a big part in meeting our goals. By accentuating special features on the walls and addressing the focal points of each room, I managed to create a beautiful aesthetic that was both functional and practical.

LIST SOME OF THE SOURCES OR CRAFTSMAN

Possibly, the most important ingredient to the success of any project, big or small, is your team. Equipping yourself with skilled, reliable, honest, punctual, hardworking artisans in this fun-filled city may present a challenge. I feel very lucky, as I have found a team that is committed and dedicated to their work. Percy KoK (contractor) delivered a perfectly matched Creme-Marfill floor. Migues Angel – appropriate name for a divine painter – was very creative. Cesar Gonzales is a carpenter with gifted hands and Rudy Gayle is a literally a miracle-worker electrician.

The Main source of furnishings came from Scan Design in North Miami Beach. Susan Raymond (an in-house designer) with so much patience, grace and knowledge made the home furnishing hunt a speedy and pleasant experience. Margo Grinman, an independent designer advisor at Sipute, a store with a unique touch of style, was very accommodating. Eclectic Elements, operated and owned by Monia Suleski, provided many valuable touches. Her store, as the name suggests, offers an eclectic array of some of everything. Maurice at Expert Furniture provided some of the final vital additions. Ruben Lemus of ALLart of Weston — a 30-minute custom framing outfit that will pick-up, frame, deliver and even hang your art — was wonderful.

WHAT WAS THE MAIN OBJECTIVE OF THE DESIGN?

The main objective was to create a home that is both fashio-conscious and functional while reflecting the beauty of its outdoor surroundings — majestic sunsets, and angelic sunrises. “The outdoor beauty and the desirable structure of a three-story townhouse was inspiration enough. My client wanted to be sure of the route he wanted to take before proceeding with the enhancement, as it took him several months to decide when to start the project. Thus, my time from start-to-finish became limited. However, with a clear and concise concept of the task before me, I moved forward full-steam-ahead, with ample artistic liberties,” home-enhancer Ana Oz explained.

Half of the Town House was carpeted, including four flights of stairs. The four-year old carpet was removed and replaced with a Creme-Marfil marble to match the remaining four-year-old Travertine floor in the rest of the house. The 34 windows throughout, including four double-French doors, had to be carefully addressed. What was needed was a combination of neutral soothing, light textured drapes and Roman shades. These we key factors as far as privacy and natural lighting were concerned. In thinking of ways to maintain that inviting feeling throughout the abode, the predominant wall colors were neutral hues, and the contrasting colors were derived from accessories. The psychedelic wallpaper in the his and hers master baths was replaced with a graceful pearl finish Venetian Stucco to flow with the existing white cabinetss, and stainless steel handles, giving it that spa-style flair as it was the intended goal. the stairs and hallway was necessary. “We chose glass with stainless stell handles. It automatically revealed a dramatic difference plus a view of the floor below. Tearing down the overwhelming entertainment center was a bitter-sweet and substantial alteration, as it was imperative for the modern-izing of the project. An exquisite linear, simple, however, substantial custom-made wall unit now replaces it. the wet-bar was spared any major trauma, instead the exisiting structure was re-covered along with other minor alterations with a Wenge-veneer to match the new wall-unit.” Oz said.

VIP GUIDE 2

If your last name was Oz, there would be something magical about you too. But this is not Kansas, baby far from it! This is Miami. So where’s the magical part you ask? If you’re a jewelry and interior designer, painter, fashion coordinator, image and fashion consultant all rolled into one like Ana Oz is, the magic lies within her mixed bag of tricks.

Oz painted intensely until she developed a bad case of allergies. At the age of 18, she then moved on to working for a fashion-designing firm and then later to owning an antique store on the Upper East Side of Manhattan where she would personally handle window decor, thus fumbling into the “home-enhancing” business as she likes to call it.

To hone her artistic abilities she also took a course in jewelry designing. Oz now shuttles between being a home-enhancer and a jewelry designer. She is “artistically hyperactive” and believes that creativity is limitless.

How long have you been designing jewelry?
It’s been about five years. Seven years ago I dabbled in gemstones and I was frustrated with the limited ideas out there. Either there were high-end designs or there were the less expensive copies. As an artist I wanted something new!

What is your primary day job?
Home-enhancing. As luck would have it both home designing and jewelry projects will come in at the same time!

How do you wear so many hats?

My problem is I cannot have any time on my hands and yet I cannot do both at the same time!

Where is the jewelry manufactured and what materials do you use?
I used to have a workshop and on office but how all the pieces are handcrafted from home. I use semi-precious stones and precious metals only.

How do you choose the gems and do you go by their intrinsic properties?
I consider a person’s eye color, skin color, the dress color whether it’s casual or formal. All depends on the category of social affair. Sometimes I do go by their intrinsic properties and tell the client about it, or sometimes they’ll educate me about a stone or two. I’ll say that each piece is made with good energy, love, passion and goodwill, and I hope that my jewelry brings people some sort of good!

Do you design jewelry for men too?
Yes. I have designed very bohemian pieces for close friends, and sometimes men have asked me to design things for their significant others.

What makes an Ana Oz piece unique?
The passion I put into my designs. Everything in my life has to be different, and for some reason people take a like to whatever I create. It’s just natural.

           Where do you seek inspiration?
Being artistic is at the core of my existence. I read a lot. I am a very visual person. I visit galleries — look for color-coordinated things. I see something nobody else sees in a magazine or a painting.

Valentine’s Day is around the corner. What do you make out of romance?
Since the early eyars of our civilization, romance has played a significant role in society as the ever-present constant throughout our recorded history. Truth be told, without is we would find ourselves back in the prehistoric times when the male suitor would pull their prospective female companion by the hair out of the cave. Although, who is to say this was not romantic. As subjective as romance has always been, it is surely the way to a girl’s heart and nothing says “love” better than a piece of jewelry.

The 7000-square-foot luxurious penthouse waterfront condo in Sunny Isles is one of several homes the owner owns. The home features four bedrooms, six bathrooms, a 400-square-foot children’s play area and maid’s quarters. The goal was to create a contemporary home that was clean, uncluttered, fun, colorful, and comfortable for the family of five.

The decorator-ready condo’s asymmetrical rooms and walls were a major challenge for Oz and her team. The apartment offered sweeping waterfront views of Sunny Isles Beach looking north and south. “It’s beautifl. The unobstructed views inspired me to use the windows as the focal point and bring the ocean feel inside.” said Oz.

The design team removed walls, reconfigured rooms, opened up the space and incorporated ceiling and architectural features. oz chose a color palette of sky blue, turquoise and shades of silver-grey to complement the color of the water and sky. “We essentially played off the ocean and clouds in the sky.” says Oz.

Except for the children’s quarters, the flooring is Botticcino marble. The children’s rooms feature Viraro wood. Oz blended white leather, silk, micro-suede, Acantara suede, platinum and gold lear, and other luxe materials. A majority of the furnishings came from the Design District, DCOTA and other specialty furniture stores throughout Miami. Lighting – chandeliers and recessed – by Farrey’s Lighting is used throughout along with custom chandeliers from NiBa Home, Artefacto, Anima Domus and Ligne Roset. Several handmade silk and silk/wool rugs by Advanced Trading Inc., and Fairth Oriental Rug Co. are placed throughout, as are silk floral arrangements by Silk Floral Gallery of Hallandale. The couple’s eclectic mix of artwork was used throughout.

Walking through the double wenge doors , the entryway conveys the home’s feel. Above, a circular dome draws the eye upward to a custom crystal chandelier from Farrey’s. On the wall, a custom wenge cabinet by Arte Practico houses Pictures of Garbage by Brazilian artist Vik Muniz. The space orinially housed a bar. On an opposite wall an ultra-suede white and chocolate custom chaise with wenge legs by New Wave Upholstery sits below a Marilyn Monroe black/white puzzle by Muniz. The area rug anchoring the entry table is silk and wool by Faith Oriental Rug.

Just off the foyer, a hallway was constructed that leads to an intimate art gallery alcove with recessed lighting. “This alcove serves two purposes. First, I had to separate the guest bath from the kitchen and in building the separation I was able to create the perfect alcove to display some of my client’s most prominent artwork.” explained Oz. The gallery houses mattress art by Victor Kuipca and a Picasso.

The living room and dining room adjoin, yet the space is open. The focal point is a custom wrap-around built-in cabinet space by Arte Practico that houses a plasma TV and speakers. In the Middles of the ceiling is an oval-shaped Swarovski and Shonbeck crystal chandelier from Farrey’s. A wenge and glass coffee table by Artefacto, a silk rug by Faith Oriental, a two-piece leather sectional by Scan Design and two custom brown micro-suede chairs by New Wave Upholstery are prominently displayed. The room features a silver-blue Venetian stucco with a long tear-like scuplted paint technique wall that serves as a backdrop for a white painted wood and glass cabinet/server. A freestanding Venezia floor lam by Catalan Italia and a colorful painting by Diego Montilla become the first focal point.

In the dining room minimalism is the tone. Here, a beveled hand-cut aquamarine Azulee crystal chandelier by NiBa Home hands above a custom oval tempur glass top and a Lisbon acrylic dining base by E.G. Cody that seats 10. The extra-wide wenge chairs are covered in grey-blue fabric by Jeffrey Michaels & Co. and dressed in removable custom white linen covers designed by Oz. A handmade silk turquoise and coral rug by Advanced Trading is under the table.

“Trying to maintain the breathtaking sky and ocean backsplash view of the dining room was our main goal. Choosing a clear glass table with a clear acrylic pedestal was appropriate. I chose the beveled glass-top to work with and preserve the rounded lines of the building’s architecture.” she said.

Off the living room is a sitting room situated in front of an office. Here four custom white leather chairs from Oz’s private furniture collection surround a glass-top cocktail table from Scan Design while Artefacto’s Gallery Swarovski crystal chandelier hangs above.

Oz brought in grey raw silk pillows embedded with tiny pearls. A wool/silk turquoise and gold rug plays off a 3-D sculpture of a violin by French designer Arman that sits on the cocktail table and Picasso that hangs on the wall.

The office doorway is framed by custom wenge double pocket doors with frosted glass by Artefacto. Inside, the office overlooks Sunny Isles Beach. An ultra-suede sofa by Design within Reach sits against a wall adorned in bouquets of silk orchids by Silk Floral Gallery. on the back wall is a built-in wrap-around office desk/library in wenge by Arte Practico. Recessed lighting by Farrey’s and a wall-mounted plasma TV are also featured.

The children’s playroom is done in blue with orange detailing and features a 125-gallon saltwater man-made aquarium by Living Color. To accommodate the aquarium and much-needed storage space, Oz created built-in cabinets for the family’s three small children. The walls are Venetian plaster. Custom mini micro-suede sofa and chairs are the focal point. A homework area features Kartell acrylic chairs from Genius Jones and desk space.

A guest bedroom features a custom dark brown micro-suede full-size bed that was made to look like an oversized daybed by New Wave Upholstery. Oz created a wenge wall cabinet to house a plasma TV and add some desk spack. Silk drapery by Kravet and Jeffrey Michaels & Co. and motorized window treatments by Maria Clara of Urive Window Treatments is used throughout the home.

“The room was semi-triangular, so it was a challenge within itself in terms of design space. In the end, the decor in the room played so well with its irregular architectural design.” said Oz.

Perhaps the most challenging for Oz and her team was the master bedroom as the walls, floor and deiling were uneven. To create uniformity, soffits were created over the bed and entryway to frame the room; recessed lighting was added throughout. Oz used the view of Sunny Isles Beach as the backsplash and again brought in hues of grey, white and sky blue. The room is richly furnished in wenge and chocolate.

The eye is automatically drawn to two oversized [48×76] wenge framed beveled square mirrors from Eclectic Elements in Coral Gables. Other features include a white leather bed from Scan Design with a silk bedding by Bloomingdale’s, two custom oversized end tables made of wenge and acrylic with built-in lighting by Artefacto, a white ultra-suede custom love seat, a white leather and wenge chaise from Adriana Hoyos, a wenge wall unit and a one-of-a-kind silk turquoise and sand color rug.

Inspired by the view and colors of the ocean, this classic modern home showcases what great design and minimalism can do. “This is by far my favorite job.” said Oz. “I loved having the sweeping views as my canvas.”
